The Benefits of Exfoliation for Glowing Skin

This week, I wanted to share some insights on the benefits of exfoliation and how it can enhance your skincare routine.

Why Exfoliate?

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover, leaving your skin looking radiant and smooth. But above all else, regular exfoliation helps ensure your skin barrier functions properly. The skin serves many important functions, including protecting our bodies from toxins and absorbing key nutrients. When the skin's barrier is compromised, it can be difficult for it to function properly. There are two main types of exfoliation: manual and chemical.

Manual Exfoliation involves using scrubs or brushes to physically remove dead skin cells. This method is great for immediate results, but it's important to be gentle to avoid irritation. With manual methods, you can exfoliate up to 2-3 times a week.

Chemical Exfoliation uses acids like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) to dissolve dead skin cells. This method can be more effective for deeper exfoliation but can also be more harsh on the skin. Depending on the type of chemical, it is recommended to exfoliate no more than 1-2 times a week and to always use an SPF.

A word of caution...

There is a growing trend in the skincare industry around chemical exfoliators in the form of AHA/BHA toners. With this trend, skincare professionals are also seeing an uptick in clients with compromised skin barriers from over-usage of such products. As a result, I recommend leaving the chemical exfoliation to skincare professionals such as estheticians and dermatologists, and opt for manual exfoliating products for in-home use.

Tips for Facial Exfoliation: Use a gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant 1-2 times a week. I use Soft Power by Free & True Skincare. It's a soft exfoliating powder made with coconut milk, banana powder to buff away dead skin. It is gentle enough to be used multiple times a week and is included in the Ultimate Hydrating Facial and 30-Minute Express Facial. Avoid harsh scrubs that can damage your skin. Be sure to follow up with a treatment serum (at night) and SPF (during the day) for lasting benefits.

Tips for Body Exfoliation: Use a body scrub or exfoliating tools like gloves in the shower. I currently offer dry brushes and African exfoliating washcloths in the studio. Focus on rough areas like elbows, knees, feet, and any areas needing special attention.

Don't forget SPF

No matter what type of exfoliating method you choose, it is important to include regular usage of SPF. As we exfoliate, we are exposing "new skin" to the sun, which can also be more sensitive and prone to pigmentation. It is important to protect the skin to avoid complications or sensitivities.

Regular exfoliation can transform your skin, giving you a healthy, glowing complexion. Let's discover what exfoliating method is right for you - let's book your next skincare session today!
